Rolmex Golf Club Tournament Guidelines
Tournament Structure
- Each Tournament will contain at least two flights, A and B. If there are 12 or fewer players for a tournament, there will be a single flight for all players.
- All handicapped, Rolmex member players will be placed into one of the two flights based on handicap index. At each tournament, the flights will be created with roughly an equal number of players in each flight.
- The handicap chairman reserves the right to create slightly unequal flights to keep similar handicap players together in a flight.
- Guests are welcome to play in any tournament provided there are available slots.
- If non-handicapped players and/or guests are entered, they will be placed in a third D flight that will not compete for prizes. Rolmex members playing in D flight do earn participation points.
- Players without a handicap index may compete for long drive and closest to the pin. Guests will be placed in A or B flight based on recommendation of their host. Rolmex members will be placed in their most likely flight.
- Members interested in playing a tournament must notify the Treasurer prior to the deadline for that tournament via mail or email. Signup deadlines are posted on the Rolmex website at www.rolmexgolf.weebly.com. Green fees must be paid prior to the deadline. Members can request their preferred playing partners and the Treasurer and Handicap Chair will accommodate such requests to the extent possible
Tournament Play
- All Rolmex tournaments are Net Stroke Play unless otherwise announced. A player’s net score will be his gross score minus his course handicap.
- Before the start of each tournament, each player must obtain a scorecard. Blank scorecards generally will be available on the first tee. The player will write his/her name and course handicap for the set of tees in play for that day listed from the pairings list posted on the first tee.
- Each player will have the option to play from any set of tees listed as in play for that day. However, the player must continue to play from whichever set of tees he/she chooses on the first tee for the reminder of the round. See Rolmex Local Rules in Section 12 concerning playing from the wrong tee.
- Each player shall exchange his/her scorecard before the beginning of the round with a fellow competitor in his group. The fellow competitor will act as the player’s marker for the round. The marker will record the player’s gross score on each hole and must sign the player’s scorecard at the completion of the round.
- Each player is responsible for identifying which flight they are part of based on the pairings sheet posted on the first tee. Players who sign for the wrong flight for the long drive or closest to the pin competitions will be removed from that competition. If that player is the “winner” of the particular competition, then the points and prize will roll over to the next tournament.
- At the conclusion of the round, the player must return the scorecard to the Tournament Chair, signed by both the player and the marker. Each player is responsible for ensuring that hole-by-hole gross scores, handicap and number of putts are correct. He/she is not responsible for the addition of his/her score or determination of his/her net score.
- Questions or disputes regarding score, rules, penalties, handicap or any other item that may affect a player’s score must be resolved before signing and returning the scorecard. A scorecard that has been signed and turned in to the Tournament Chair is unalterable once the results are announced on the day of the tournament. An incorrect scorecard will result in the applicable penalty as set forth in the Rules of Golf, which may include disqualification.
- Any rules questions, disputes or other disagreements will be decided by the Tournament Committee composed of the Handicap Chair, and/or other club officers in accordance with the Rules of Golf and Decisions on the Rules of Golf as published by the USGA and any applicable Rolmex local rules.
- All Tournaments are played by summer rules unless otherwise designated by the Tournament Chairman.
- Each player is responsible for posting his own score to the GHIN system. Except for the year-end Tournament of Champions, all scores should be posted as “A” or away scores. Only the Tournament of Champions scores should be posted as “T” or tournament scores.
Tournament Chair
- Any member in good standing may volunteer to be a Tournament Chair. Volunteers for Tournament Chair are accepted beginning at the Annual Banquet when the schedule for the following year is announced.
- The Tournament Chair acts as the host at each tournament.
- The Tournament Chair posts on the first tee the pairing sheet listing all players, their flights, and their Course handicaps and the sign-up sheet for the Better Ball competition.
- The Tournament Chair determines, and posts on the first tee, whether the tournament shall be played under Winter Rules.
- The Tournament Chair selects, and posts on the first tee, the Long Drive and Closest to the Pin holes. The Tournament Chair is also responsible for placing the long drive and closest to the pin stakes on the tee of the designated holes
- At the conclusion of the round, the Tournament Chair is responsible for collecting the scorecards and recording the information on the scoring sheets. He/she determines the winners in each flight, announces the results, and awards the golf ball prizes. See 3.9 for additional information regarding when a tournament is considered closed and results are official.
- The Tournament Chair also collects Better Ball money from the participants and provides that amount to the Treasurer.
- The Tournament Chair is also responsible for recording the time each group reports the completion of their round to him/her. This information is used by the Tournament Committee to assess whether a group should be penalized based on Rolmex Tournament Guidelines Item 12.5.
- Because it is not always possible to resolve all rules questions and check scorecards for mathematical accuracy at the course, the announcement of results at the course is considered to be preliminary. A tournament is not considered to be closed and the results to be official until the results are posted to the Rolmex website, generally within two weeks of the date of the tournament.

Match Play
9.1. Rolmex conducts a season long Match Play tournament. The entry fee is $20.

9.3. The initial Match Play bracket will include deadlines by which matches must be completed. If a match is not completed by the deadline the match will be forfeited to the player who has played more Rolmex events.
9.4. In general, if two players are both signed up for a Rolmex tournament and are scheduled to play a match (other than the final match), then the players will be paired together and the match must be played at that tournament. The match may be postponed only if both players agree and they determine an alternate date for the match, either within or outside a Rolmex tournament before the deadline for the match. In addition, the Handicap Chair may postpone a match if pairings require it. For the final match, the Handicap Chair will work with the two players to determine an acceptable venue and date for the match. If a player refuses to play a match when it is scheduled, other than in accordance with this rule, he will be considered to have conceded the match.
9.5. Matches played within Rolmex events should be played in accordance with match play rules to the extent possible. However, no concessions are allowed. Matches played outside of Rolmex events should be played in accordance with match play rules.

If they elect to play the final match outside of a Rolmex tournament then the green fees for the round will be paid for by the Club up to the amount of the entry fees collected. Any entry fee money remaining after the green fees are paid will be split between the finalists, 70% to the Match Play Champion and 30% to the runner up. In addition, the Match Play Champion will receive possession of the perpetual Match Play trophy for one year.

Rules of Play
Rolmex is a social club that plays in accordance with the Rules of Golf, as modified by any local rules published by the particular course being played. In general, the rules of play and etiquette established by the NCGA and USGA are observed. Players are expected to know and proceed in accordance with the Rules of Golf and the applicable local rules. (Local rules are generally listed on the scorecard or available in the pro shop.) There are no “gimmies;” every ball must be holed out. Failure to hole out on any hole will result in disqualification. Several Rolmex Local Rules (12.2, in particular) alter or expand the USGA rules to facilitate or speed play, primarily because it is not always possible to apply “stroke and distance” penalties on a busy public golf course. Intentional misuse of any of these rules will be grounds for disqualification.
12.1 Ball Lost or Discovered Out of Bounds
Note: This option is NOT available if you have played a provisional ball.
If the player has NOT played a provisional ball and his or her ball is not found or it is known or virtually certain that the ball is out of bounds, he or she may use the following option instead of stroke-and-distance:
If the player has NOT played a provisional ball and his or her ball is not found or it is known or virtually certain that the ball is out of bounds, he or she may use the following option instead of stroke-and-distance:
- Estimate where the ball is lost or went out of bounds. Imagine a line from the hole back through that point.
- Estimate a point on the closest edge of the fairway that is equidistant to where the ball was lost or went out of bounds. Imagine a line from the hole back through that point.
- Drop a ball anywhere within the area bounded by the two imaginary lines in 1 and 2 or within up to two club lengths further into the fairway. The ball may not be dropped closer to the hole than the estimated point where it was lost or went out of bounds and must stay within the defined area after it is dropped.
12.2 Playing from the Wrong Tees
USGA Rule 6.1b covers playing from the wrong tee. A stroke played from a different tee than the tees from which the player began the round shall be considered a stroke played from the wrong teeing area and shall be cancelled and, under a two-stroke penalty, the ball shall be played from the correct tees. If a player discovers that he has played from the wrong tees after he has left the teeing area and it is impractical to return to the tee, he shall under penalty of two strokes continue to play his ball. If the error is discovered after the completion of the hole the player shall add a two-stroke penalty to his score for that hole. If the error is discovered after the scorecard has been signed and turned in but before the results have been posted to the website, the penalty will be added to the player’s score and results recalculated. If the error is discovered after the results are posted to the website, the results stand as reported. However, intentionally playing from the wrong teeing ground to take advantage of this local rule shall result in disqualification.
12.3 Drop Zones
- Unless otherwise noted on the pairing sheets on the first tee, any drop zones established by the course may be used as an additional option for a ball that is lost in a penalty area.
12.4 Winter Rules
At the beginning of a tournament, the Tournament Chair may declare “winter rules” for that tournament. To be in effect, this must be written on each pairing sheet on each first tee being used for the tournament. When winter rules are declared, the following rule is in effect:
- A ball lying in a closely-mown area in the general area may be lifted without penalty and cleaned. Before lifting the ball, the player must mark its position. Having lifted the ball, he must place it on a spot that is within one club length of and not nearer the hole than where it originally lay, that is not in a penalty area and not on a putting green.
12.5 Not Used
12.6 Rainouts
12.6.1. Many courses Rolmex plays do not issue refunds if the course is playable at the designated tournament starting time. Therefore, it is the responsibility of each player to be present at the tournament site until the tournament is cancelled. Some courses will allow refunds with proper notification (calling the course); however, Rolmex will not be responsible for refunds if the course does not issue a refund.
12.6.2. The Tournament Chair and Club Officers shall determine the course of action to be taken in the event of a tournament rainout. If tournament play has started, all scorecards must be turned into the Tournament Chairman for the holes completed.
12.6.2. The Tournament Chair and Club Officers shall determine the course of action to be taken in the event of a tournament rainout. If tournament play has started, all scorecards must be turned into the Tournament Chairman for the holes completed.
12.7 Pace of Play
12.7.1 Each group is responsible for maintaining pace of play and should try to remain within one shot of the group in front of them.
12.7.2. In an effort to speed play, a player may pick up his ball at any time and record a score of 9 for any hole. Any player picking up will record a three-putt for the purposes of the fewest putts completion for the round. In a match, if a player uses this option, he concedes the hole.
12.7.3. A provisional ball may be played at any time, including when the original ball may be in a water hazard. If the original ball is found, it may be played or it may be abandoned and the provisional ball played under penalty of stroke and distance. (Example: if the ball is found in trees between two tree roots and is unplayable.) If the original ball is not found, then the player must continue with the provisional ball. (Note: This rule allows the player to continue play with a provisional ball in the case where the original ball is determined to be unplayable. This is to improve pace of play only and is not allowed other than in a Rolmex tournament.)
12.7.4. The pace of play for Rolmex tournaments is 4 hours 45 minutes for a course that allows carts on the fairways and 5 hours for courses where carts are restricted to cart paths. In a Rolmex tournament, a group may be subject to a two-stroke penalty for undue delay of play if at the completion of the 18th hole they are both (1) more than 30 minutes behind the previous group and (2) more than 30 minutes behind the course pace of play. The Tournament Committee will determine if a penalty is warranted. The penalty will be assessed by adding two strokes to the player's score on the 18th hole.
12.7.2. In an effort to speed play, a player may pick up his ball at any time and record a score of 9 for any hole. Any player picking up will record a three-putt for the purposes of the fewest putts completion for the round. In a match, if a player uses this option, he concedes the hole.

(Example: if the ball is found in trees between two tree roots and is unplayable.) If the original ball is not found, then the player must continue with the provisional ball. (Note: This rule allows the player to continue play with a provisional ball in the case where the original ball is determined to be unplayable. The Tournament Committee will determine if a penalty is warranted. The penalty will be assessed by adding two strokes to the player's score on the 18th hole.
12.8 Handicapping
All tournaments will be played to a maximum handicap of 36.
12.9 Distance-Measuring Devices
For all play in Rolmex Tournaments, a player may obtain distance information by using a distance-measuring device. Distance-measuring devices that also measure other conditions, such as gradient, wind speed or direction or temperature, may be used provided that the additional functions are not accessed during the round. Specifically, iPhones equipped with a golf-course mapping app that also include a compass function may be used provided the compass function is not accessed during the round. Any doubt as to whether a player has accessed a non-allowed function will be resolved against the player and result in a two stroke penalty for the first offense. Any subsequent offense will result in disqualification.
2019 Rule Changes Summary

- Lift the ball, clean it and place it in the bunker within one club length of where it originally lay no closer to the hole. NO PENALTY.
- Keeping the point where the ball originally lay between you and the hole, drop the ball outside the bunker. ONE PENALTY STROKE
REMEMBER TO POST YOUR SCORES. THE USGA HAS SAID THAT ROUNDS PLAYED UNDER COVID 19 CONDITIONS CAN AND SHOULD BE POSTED.
